Different types of communities in Enterprise Collaboration Software

Organisational Entity (OE), Topic and Project Community

Our research on the use of Enterprise Collaboration Systems (ECS) has shown the emergence of three generic types of communities. These three types are characterised by their purpose. The Organisational Entity (OE) Community brings together members of a defined organisational group, such as a division, a department or a standing committee; entities that are usually reflected in the organisational chart. Work in this type of community is long-term and there is no defined end. A Topic Community forms around a joint interest. It has no defined ending and lasts as long as the topic is of interest or relevance to the community members. The Project Community consists of a group of people who work on a defined activity with collaborative tasks for a limited time with a defined end.
